About 6 years ago an impetuous group of Alaskan divers
hired scuba instructors from California to teach us a "new" class called the
fundamentals of better diving. I hand-picked 7 of my best dive buddies
and we embarked upon the training. Within the first day, we realized
that although we had all been diving for over 10 years, we were going
to FAIL our first scuba class ever! It didn't feel very good, but it
did make us more determined to pass! We invited the same instructors
back six months later, and promptly failed again! This is getting embarrassing guys. Finally, I asked my buddies to dinner one night and
produced a 2 month calendar. If everyone's name was on the calendar at
least 4 times, I would invite the instructors back ONE MORE TIME. This
time, everyone really got serious about practice and lo and behold...we
all passed! Since then, our passion for diving has sky-rocketed as the
result of our new found abilities. From cave diving in Florida and Mexico, to wreck diving in Chuuk, our new dive adventure is limitless.
To channel our efforts into something more meaningful than swimming around looking at fish, we're focused on trying to make a difference in the conservation of our oceans. We've all seen the decline in Ling cod, Rock fish, wolf eels, and octopus. We live and dive in some of the most pristine water in the world, and we'd like to pass this legacy along to our kids to enjoy. By forming a non-profit 501 (3) (c) corporation, and building an affiliation with Global Underwater Explorers, we hope to gain funding and cooperation with government agencies to assist with research and conservation projects.
